Nephrology is the medical specialty looking after various kidney diseases, high blood pressure and related medical problems. Kidney diseases are often complex, involving multiple organ systems, and commonly associated with burdens of chronic disease. A kidney specialist is called a Nephrologist, also known as Renal Physician.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a very common condition in Australia, with more people diagnosed with this condition every year.
* Risk factors for CKD: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, family history of CKD, obesity, smoking, 60 years or older, are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, have a history of acute kidney injury.

CKD is a significant problem, as it is associated with higher rate of heart disease and death. It also tends to worsen over time, and without suitable treatment, some people may progress to kidney failure requiring dialysis. Worryingly, people may lose up to 90% of kidney function before experiencing symptoms.
For these reasons, it is recommended that all Australians, particularly those at higher risk of developing CKD, undergo regular medical checks and screening for CKD. Early detection and treatment can improve the course of the disease, preventing many associated complications.
